A plain-English glossary of the Dubai travel terms you'll actually meet — from RTA and Nol to DEWA, DXB vs DWC, and abaya etiquette — so nothing on your trip is a surprise.
Getting around & essentials
Nol Card
The rechargeable smart card for Dubai's Metro, tram, buses and water buses — tap in and out; a red paper Nol works for occasional trips.
RTA
Dubai's Roads & Transport Authority — it runs the Metro, buses, taxis and the Nol system.
DXB vs DWC
DXB is Dubai International (close to the city); DWC is Al Maktoum International (further south). Check which one your flight uses.
AED / Dirham
The UAE dirham, pegged at about 3.67 to the US dollar. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; keep a little cash for souks.
Culture & etiquette
Abaya / Kandura
Traditional dress — the black abaya worn by women and the white kandura by men. Modest dress is appreciated at mosques and heritage sites.
Friday–Saturday weekend
The UAE weekend is Saturday–Sunday for most, with Friday a half-day; brunch culture peaks on weekends.
